Reading all the plot analysis, I can't help but laugh at all the amateurs. I don't claim to have it all figured out just yet, but more or less I should be spot on.

So many layers in this movie... thats why I love it. This is a very symbolic illuminati/masonic work, they like to shove the truth into our faces, labeled as fiction, because only crazy people believe fictitious movie plots are REAL. This movie has much more truth in it than any of you are willing to research.

Unfortunately for Teddy, when he raided the Nazi camp, killed the guards and more importantly the botched suicide of the nazi general. He made enemies with powerful people. It seems that Dr Naehring wanted revenge for what the Marines did to his colleagues (or possible relatives), and Teddy's wife was killed because of this. The man who killed her was programmed using Dr Naehring's orbital lobotomy. I know this because of the record player and Mahler song we hear playing in the scene where Teddy first meets Dr. Naehring. The song and record player are the identical ones we see in the flash back that occurs in the same scene where the nazi general lies dying on the floor with Teddy standing over him. The fact that Dr. Naehring knows the song, the fact that Teddy knows it, the fact that its the same record player and RECORD in both shots, the fact that Dr. Naehring acts surprised when Teddy recognizes it, just makes it seem like more than simple coincidence. That is the connection between Teddy and Shutter island. Teddy pissed off the wrong Nazi, who after being brought to the USA to continue his research under the project codename "Project Paperclip" (Yes Google It), used his creations (aka the "Ghosts") to seek out his revenge. What better way to test if you've properly programmed your ghost than to send him to kill someone from your past who caused you grief... get two birds with one stone. Unfortunately for Teddy, he "could not let go" of his wife and had to keep digging, trying to find her killer. This is why his wife's ghost and others kept telling him to let her go. After Dr. Naehring killed his wife they were even, but when Teddy began to uncover their secrets, they could not risk having him on the main land where he could blow the lid off of the conspiracy. They gave him numerous chances to leave, but he made it clear that he would never stop searching for her killer(s), and he realized this at the end and decided to get the lobotomy.

The whole idea of tricking someone into thinking they are insane is a common practice in the USA and globally, those who speak out against the government and this global conspiracy are labeled insane... well the movie explains that part pretty well. Enjoy your Hollywood Induced Lobotomies
